Particle-Velocity-Based Mixed-Source Sound Field Translation for Binaural Reproduction

Following the rise of virtual reality is a demand for sound field reproduction techniques that allow user to interact and move within acoustic reproductions with six-degrees-of-freedom. To this end, mixed-source model near-field far-field sources has been introduced improve performance translation in binaural spatial audio recordings. The previous works, however, expand terms mixed based on pressure. In paper, we develop new expansion particle velocity, which contributes more precise reconstruction interaural phase difference and, therefore, improved human perception localization. We represent velocity over space using coefficients spherical harmonic domain, driving signals mixed-sources are estimated by constructing cost functions optimize coefficients. Compared state-of-the-art method, sound-pressure-based expansion, show through numerical simulations proposed particle-velocity-based better sparse solutions, allowing perceptual immersion larger space. Finally, perceptually validate method Multiple Stimulus Hidden Reference Anchor (MUSHRA) experiment single source scenario. experimental results support method.
